How It Works

Load Estimation

The calculator estimates weekly laundry loads using industry averages:

  1. Per-person laundry output: Adults generate roughly 2 loads per week; children generate about 1.5 loads. These are adjusted by activity level.
  2. Bed linens & towels: Adds approximately 1 load per week for every 2 household members (washed weekly).
  3. Activity multiplier: Low = 0.8×, Moderate = 1.0×, High = 1.3× of the base load count.
Cost Calculation
  1. Water cost per load: gallons per load ÷ 1,000 × water rate
  2. Energy cost per load: kWh per load × electricity rate (plus dryer if included)
  3. Total cost per load: water + energy + detergent
  4. Weekly/monthly/yearly costs: cost per load × number of loads in the period
Typical Water Usage by Washer Type
  • HE Front-Load: 13–15 gallons per load
  • HE Top-Load: 15–20 gallons per load
  • Standard Top-Load: 30–45 gallons per load
Tips to Reduce Laundry Costs
  • Wash full loads instead of partial loads to maximize efficiency
  • Use cold water for most loads — heating water accounts for about 90% of washer energy use
  • Clean the dryer lint filter before every load to improve efficiency
  • Consider air-drying clothes when weather permits
  • Upgrade to an HE front-load washer for the lowest water and energy consumption
